The coronavirus pandemic has caused global turmoil and triggered a global financial reset. Businesses are shutting down, the rate of unemployment is going through the roof and the cost of goods, such as medical equipment (PPE), food and household items, is increasing daily.

The price of masks, for example, is now 10 to 20 times the normal price and it keeps skyrocketing as its demand keeps increasing every day. But it’s not even the price that people have to worry about. In places where they are needed the most, medical masks are unavailable. Many hospitals are out of supplies and this has made people improvise by making homemade/DIY masks. While homemade masks may not meet the required medical standard but half bread is better than none, right?

Due to these shortages, people all over the world are helping out. A London based teenager is using his 3D printer to create face shields for medical personnel and he is not the only one. Many other teenagers have joined in the fight, helping out by using 3D printers to create face shields, N95 masks, and mask accessories to ease the discomfort that medical personals suffer because they wear masks for hours. A group of medical students are lending a hand to medical doctors in the frontlines by helping babysit their children. Malaysian prison inmates are lending their support by sewing protective gear for medical personnel.

It’s heartening to know that amidst all these turmoil and fear, ordinary people are stepping up and making an effort to reduce the suffering of others who are affected by COVID 19. It’s the simple acts of kindness, and these deeds of ordinary people, that spread hope and remind us that we are all in this together and that we can all play a role in putting an end to this pandemic. Everyone has something to offer and no effort is too small. Even if all you can do to help in this fight against coronavirus, is to spread awareness by putting up a masked avatar on your social media profile or by donating to support initiatives like #wewearmasks, do it.

#WeWearMasks

“WeWearMasks” is a campaign started by TokenPocket Foundation(TPF) aimed at encouraging people to wear a face mask when they must go outside and protect themselves and their families from the virus. Through this online campaign, TPF aims to give a $5 mask subsidy to 10 participants every day. TPF has made an initial donation of $1,000 and set up wallets for public donations. All the funds will be distributed as mask subsidies to participants of the #wewearmasks event who need the funds. At the end of the campaign, whatever is left from the #wewearmask donations would be donated to UNICEF.

To participate in the campaign, go to the campaign page and generate a masked avatar. Use the masked avatar for your display pictures or social media profiles and share the campaign across all your social platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Telegram, etc). Invite your friends to join the campaign too but more importantly, encourage them to wear masks. You can also make donations to support the campaign.

We may not all have the skills of medical doctors who are at the frontlines, treating the sick or finding a cure. But we can play our part by staying at home, practising social distancing and keeping a high level of personal hygiene and if at all we must go outdoors, #wewearmasks.

Some people believe it’s only the responsibility of others to hold this pandemic in check. That’s not what I’ve found. I’ve found that it’s also the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folks, simple acts of sacrifice and care, that buys time … to keep the disease at bay. — Charlie Hopkinson
